What Are Content Pillars (and Why They Finally Made Marketing Make Sense for Me)

I’ll be honest—I used to be confused by the term content pillars. It sounded strategic (and slightly intimidating), but no one explained it in a way that felt practical. I kept hearing things like “you need pillars” without a clear explanation of how that actually helped me show up, post consistently, or run my marketing business.
Once I simplified it in my own head, everything clicked.
So let’s start there.
What Are Content Pillars?
Content pillars are the main topics your business talks about, on purpose. The core themes that guide:
What you post
What you write about
What your audience recognizes you for
Instead of creating random content, content pillars give your marketing structure. They answer one simple question:
What do I want to be known for?
Once I reframed content pillars as “the few things my business should consistently talk about,” they stopped feeling complicated and started feeling useful.
Why Content Pillars Are So Helpful
Here’s why content pillars changed everything for me—and for my clients:
1. They Create Clarity
For you and your audience. People quickly understand what you do and how you help.
2. They Make Content Easier
No more staring at a blank screen. You’re choosing from a small set of topics instead of inventing ideas from scratch.
3. They Build Trust Over Time
When you consistently talk about the same themes, you reinforce expertise. Repetition isn’t boring—it’s reassuring.
4. They Keep Marketing Focused
Not every idea deserves a post. If it doesn’t support a pillar, it’s probably noise.
How I Simplified Content Pillars for My Marketing Business
I stopped overthinking it and asked myself three questions:
What do clients come to me for?
What do I talk about most naturally?
What supports my actual services?
From there, three clear pillars emerged.
Sample Content Pillars
Sue Borst Marketing – 3 Core Content Pillars
Brand Strategy & Messaging: Helping businesses get clear on what they say and how they say it.
Content Creation & Execution: Blogs, social media, email—turning ideas into tangible, consistent content.
Visibility & Growth: Helping brands get found, stay relevant, and grow with intention.
Everything I create fits into one of those three buckets. Simple. Sustainable. Strategic.
Here are other examples of Content Pillars for other businesses
Financial Advisory Firm – 3 Core Content Pillars
Financial Education: Education on complex topics in clear, approachable language.
Planning & Life Transitions: Retirement, major milestones, long-term financial clarity.
Trust & Market Perspective: Market insights, fiduciary values, steady guidance during uncertainty.
These pillars balance expertise with reassurance—exactly what clients need.
Private School – 3 Core Content Pillars
Academic Excellence: Curriculum, learning outcomes, classroom experience.
Student Experience & Community: Culture, values, student life, belonging.
Enrollment & Parent Communication: Admissions, events, updates, and family engagement.
Together, they speak to both the heart and the head of prospective families.
The Takeaway
Content pillars aren’t about creating more content. They’re about creating clearer, more intentional content.
Once you define a small set of pillars:
Marketing feels lighter
Decisions are easier
Consistency becomes achievable
Your content starts working with you instead of against you.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by content or unsure what your pillars should be, that’s usually the best place to start.
If you’d like help defining yours—or turning them into a simple content plan—let’s talk.
